I have been involved in animal sessions with Dale many times, in two different school settings. Both schools are schools that work with students with ‘Special Educational Needs’, predominantly Autism. Over the sessions I have witnessed the student light up at the prospect of handling the reptiles and other animals. Students engage with the animals, and have even developed communication skills that were unknown before the integration of the animals. Bringing snakes, reptiles and even skunks into a school of Special Needs students could be a barrier that prevents staff organising this opportunity. Having witnessed the huge positive impact that this experience has on the students, I would say, please overlook the stereotypes of the animals, this experience could be one of the most positive, engaging, and worthwhile that some your student may ever get.
